Itinerary
You depart Kathmandu early in the morning along the Prithvi Highway, winding past the Trishuli River and descending through the Narayanghat corridor into the southern plains. After an eight to nine-hour journey with lunch stops en route, you arrive in Lumbini by late afternoon to check into your hotel and enjoy a quiet evening walk around the outer Sacred Garden.
You will spend the day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage grounds, starting at the Maya Devi Temple Click to open side panel for more information, the birthplace of Lord Buddha alongside the Ashoka Pillar and sacred Pushkarini Pond. In the afternoon, an electric rickshaw takes you through the Monastic Zones to visit Thai, Chinese, German, and Japanese monasteries before concluding the day at the World Peace Pagoda.
You take a short drive to Tilaurakot in the Kapilvastu district, walking among the archaeological ruins of the ancient Shakya Kingdom where Prince Siddhartha lived until age 29. You continue to nearby historical sites such as Kudan and Devdaha (the maternal home of Queen Maya Devi) before returning to your hotel in Lumbini for the night.
You will leave the plains behind and drive up the Siddhartha Highway into the cool, pine-forested hills of Tansen, Palpa. In the afternoon, you explore the historic Newari town, visit the Tansen Durbar square, and take an excursion down to Rani Mahal, Nepal's iconic "Taj Mahal" set on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River.
You wake up early for sunrise views over the Himalayas from Shreenagar Hill. After breakfast, you begin the scenic return drive along the highway back up the mountains, arriving in Kathmandu by late afternoon.
